On 19 May 2022, New South Wales became the final state in Australia to pass legislation to allow voluntary assisted dying by passing the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021.

Terminally ill people with decision making capacity in New South Wales will have control over the timing of their death now that the legalisation has been passed. Voluntary assisted dying will commence in New South Wales in late 2023, following an implementation period of 18 months.

Voluntary assisted dying refers to assistance being provided to a person by medical practitioners for either self-administration when a person takes medication themselves  and practitioner administration when the person is given medication by a doctor. This is a voluntary choice of the person however they must be competent and have capacity to make the decision of voluntary assisted dying.
